Face to Face Interview with Mitchell Garrett, Fellow Space Enthusiast:

What fascinates you about space? I see space as the most adventurous area and undefined territory for us to explore. I truly believe there is life on other planets and we should strive to meet and engage new cultures. Much like Christopher Columbus did when he discovered the new world, we should strive to expand our world to other planets. There may be places in the ocean that we have not yet discovered, but I believe space is the ultimate excitement.
When did you first become interested in space? Since I was a small child, I can never remember not being fascinated by the stars and the fact that many of the lights we see as stars are no longer even in existence by the time we see them on earth.
What prompted your interest in space? The television series of Star Trek, Original Series, and the original Battleship Galactica, where instrumental in my fascination. I watched them any time they were on and I was allowed to watch them. Those shows truly opened my mind to the possibilities of space travel.
What space phenomenon do you find most interesting and why? The Blackhole - I have seen on various documentaries where scientist have discovered these "blackholes" that have enveloped stars and planets. I find that very interesting.
Which do you prefer Star Trek or Star Wars and Why? Hand down, Star Trek. Star Trek goes further into space, explore more planets, and there main goal is exploration. Star Wars is focused more on conquest and survival.
As a result of the space program there have been many new inventions for everyday use. What is one item you are glad to have as a result of space exploration? Because I am a guy, I love my wireless communication and cordless tools. All of which where developed as a result of the space program.
Where do you think the space program is going? Into space...I believe we will continue to see advancements in space travel. I think we will see the development of space shuttles that allow for further trips and longer trips for exploration.
Do you think we will travel into the far reaches of space in our lifetime? I do not think so, I believe we still have a way to go and resources are often being diverted by the government to other areas. I am not sure the space program has the support it used to have from the public.
How long do think until we are traveling regularly to the moon and / or Mars? In about 30-40 years - I hope.
How do you fill about Pluto being removed from the known list of planets? I have grown up all my life thinking of Pluto as a planet and will probably always think of it that way. However, I realize science evolves and can better identify details, again as a result of further study exploration. Many ideas we hold hard and fast to today may someday prove to be other that originally though as our science and technology continues to grow.
Mitchell Garrett is a friend of the family's who shares a fascination and deep interest in space and science fiction books and movies.
