Space and Science
Science and technology have led to great advances in the study of the endless borders of space. But what inspires individuals to study space? No other literary genre has inspired such limitless creativity as science fiction. It has enabled humankind to dream of the seemingly impossible. It allows one to envision a future of a better world. Science fiction has allowed us to travel through both inner and outer space, aboard nearly any craft imaginable, and converge with creatures beyond our wildest dreams.
Movies like Star Trek and Star Wars open the mind to what can be and encourage science to seek the unknown. Rapid advancements in the fields of technology have opened up further possibilities. One hundred years ago we could not have imagined flying across the country and yet today we have been to space and are looking at alternate ways of traveling further into space. Humans exploring and even colonizing other worlds, the plot of many science fiction stories, including Star Trek and Star Wars, have to many become inevitable. Whether or not technology is directly incorporated into a science fiction story as an obvious vehicle, the author knows that it is always present in the mind of the reader.
When I look forward to the future I can hardly imagine the changes that will occur as a result of new discoveries in science and new technologies. With so many possibilities for the future, science fiction is able to capitalize on this by showing the audience entirely new worlds and alternatives to our own. Technology in these science fiction stories poses clear questions to the audience as to the merits of such advancement. Science fiction not only allows us to escape our world but to also step into other dimensions. It lets us examine our mundane, earthbound problems from a fresh original viewpoint.
The advancement of science and technology in the twentieth century and the unknown of what lays ahead in our future have allowed science fiction to not only plausibly escape the world as we know it but to also draw upon the promise of future technology and analyze how it will change our lives. Whether technology drives science fiction or science fiction drives technology, the fact is we are moving at the speed of light into a rapidly changing world. Since technology has brought as much change as it has in the past one hundred years the next hundred should be entirely incomprehendable to us. I cannot wait to see how far out in space we are able to go in my lifetime.
